The Nantucket Land Bank was the first land acquisition program of its kind in the nation. The program, adopted by the citizens of Nantucket in 1983, is designed to protect the islands unique and endangered landscapes.
The program is funded by a two percent transfer fee on the sale of real estate on the island. An elected five member commission uses the proceeds to acquire beaches, wetlands, aquifer recharge areas, moorlands, heathlands and other land significant to Nantuckets open rural character.
The public benefit of these acquired land resources span rare species habitat and drinking water protection, to passive and active recreation - including the Miacomet Golf Course. Current holdings total over 2,209 acres.
